On August 18, 2008, EqualityMaine, announced its endorsement of Congressman Tom Allen for United States Senate. EqualityMaine, the state's oldest and largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered lobbying group, was formed in 1984.
The group cited Allen's pro-lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered voting record, his willingness to repeal the U.S. military's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy regarding homosexuals, and his attendance at lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered rallies in Maine as factors that led to their endorsement.
The Maine lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered group stated they'll want Allen to assist them with federal employment legislation to protect the transgendered: "We look forward to working with [Allen] to win fully-inclusive federal employment non-discrimination legislation."
Mike Heath, Executive Director of the 111 year-old League, said of the endorsement, "This whole issue is so painful. Pandering to win the support of crossdressers is beyond the pale. The only thing worse than Congressman Allen winning this endorsement is the fact that his opponent, a Republican, isn't any better on these critical family issues."
Allen is challenging current U.S. Senator Susan Collins for the seat. Earlier this year, Collins received an endorsement for re-election from the Human Rights Campaign, a national homosexual rights group.
