The following press release concerning the scandal involving Governor Mark Sanford of South Carolina was issued by the Maine Family Policy Council Thursday afternoon.

Once again, the media are reporting on a politician, Governor Mark Sanford of South Carolina, who has ruined his political career with a sex scandal.  And once again, the media, by picking and choosing which sex scandals are worth reporting, are guilty of an enormous double standard.

Sanford's story is widely covered by the liberal media for two reasons. First, Sanford's disloyalty to his wife - the sin of adultery - is given the picturesque setting of far-off Argentina.  Second, liberals are given yet another chance to say bad things about conservatives. Meanwhile, the gross immorality of Barney Frank elicits not a word from the liberal media.

Mike Heath, Executive Director of the Maine Family Policy Council, points out that the most important aspect of the latest sex scandal, is not the issue of adultery, nor even the glaring double standard. It is the fact that the liberal media hypocritically criticize conservatives for sex scandals, while themselves condoning and promoting the worst sort of sin.

Heath says that a case in point is Janet Mills, Maine's Attorney General, who celebrated same sex marriage with Barney Frank at a party on the Portland waterfront last week. Mills, along with Barney Frank, and many other prominent Democrats, are in favor of abortion, a practice which is tantamount to murder.

Mike Heath points out that Psalm 1 applies equally to Governor Sanford and all those who promote the sins of homosexuality and abortion in government or through the media.  Psalm 1 compares the righteous to a tree planted by a river, which will never wither, and will never be removed. As Charles Spurgeon, the Prince of Preachers, said in his commentary on Psalm 1: "The righteous carves his name upon a rock, but the wicked writes his remembrance in the sand."
