The Smear Campaign Against Maine

After the repeal of same sex marriage, public attention was diverted from the debate over "gay rights" to several blunders made by the same sex marriage movement. These blunders ranged from a heavy-handed threat against voters by Jesse Connolly, leader of the No on 1 campaign, to a march down Congress Street by same sex marriage supporters who made the night air ring with obscenities. Their latest blunder may prove to be the worst of all, when Governor Baldacci receives an award in Boston for his service to the cause of homosexual marriage.

The Governor will receive the award from The Human Rights Campaign on Saturday for being the first governor to sign a same sex marriage bill into law of his own accord. The first governor to sign such a law was Connecticut governor M. Jodi Rell, who did so under a court order from liberal activist judges. But Baldacci did more than sign the homosexual marriage bill. During the campaign, Baldacci appeared at a fundraiser for the No on 1 side; and only a few days before the vote, he cynically interfered in the People's Veto by appearing at a No on 1 campaign event to publicly endorse gay marriage.

The homosexualist movement was banking heavily on a win in Maine where they wanted to create an illusion of public support for gay marriage. The campaign relied heavily on flattering Mainers, complimenting them at every turn for their friendliness, their tolerance, and their "live and let live attitude." Within minutes of receiving the news of their loss on Question 1,  gay activists dropped the flattery, and began calling the people of Maine "bigots" and "haters."

Apart from a few unfortunate blunders such as the death threat against Mike Heath, this was their new strategy: to stigmatize the people of Maine as backwoods rubes too dumb to grasp the splendor of homosexuality and homosexual marriage.

Liberal bloggers immediately put out a call to boycott Maine and Maine products, an idea which is steadily gaining ground. Following the loss on Question 1, a clergyman from New York City wrote a local paper calling Mainers "bigots" and "fearmongers," vowing he would cancel his vacation in Maine and travel to "gay marriage friendly" Massachusetts instead.

A few days after the vote, one newspaper analyzed the defeat of same sex marriage as a contest between rural and urban Maine. But like the clergyman's letter, this analysis was an effort to polarize the people of Maine into two camps, the uninformed rural voters versus an enlightened urban elite.

This smear campaign against the people of Maine is sure to intensify in the coming weeks. When the process of polarization is complete, the homosexualist movement will play their trump card. They will go to the Maine Supreme Court, which will then legalize homosexual "marriage" in accordance with the will of the ruling liberal elite, and against the teachings of Christ and Holy Scripture.
