Governor "More Committed Than Ever to Same Sex Marriage"

In a scene straight out of Caligula's palace or one of Nero's infamous garden parties,  Maine's Governor John Baldacci  dined with same sex marriage supporters in Boston while a pair of homosexual acrobats, suspended from the ceiling by sashes, twirled round and round in the air, their colorful capes flowing out behind them. The $225 per plate affair was intended to honor politicians who have done the most to help the cause of same sex marriage, and came less than two weeks after the repeal of the same sex marriage law by the voters of Maine.

The event was hosted by the nation's largest homosexual rights group, the Human Rights Campaign, and was held at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston on November 14th. The Christian Civic League of Maine has learned through documents released from the Governor's Office, that in a draft of a speech for the event, the Governor confidently predicted that same sex marriage would eventually become law in Maine once again. The draft of the speech reads, "While the results of the this year's election are disappointing, I am more committed than ever to the cause of equality [same sex marriage]…We didn't make it to the mountain top on November 3rd. But I know that we will get there. That is the future for Maine and our nation."

Another document released to the League from the Governor's Office refers to the 'Next Step,' shorthand at the State House for the plan to re-impose same sex marriage on Maine. When the same sex marriage bill was introduced in January of last year, Governor Baldacci issued a carefully-worded statement in which he remained uncommitted on the issue, and stated that the current economic crisis called for unity among the people.

But when the Maine Legislature passed the gay marriage bill in May, the ink was hardly dry before the Governor added his own signature to make gay marriage the law of the land. In signing the bill, Baldacci said, “In the past, I opposed gay marriage while supporting the idea of civil unions. I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law, and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage."

Sometime between the introduction of the bill and the enactment of the bill into law, the Governor was mysteriously converted from a doubter into a true believer. During the campaign which led up to the vote on same sex marriage, Baldacci gave his active support to the same sex marriage cause, including participating in a $1000 per person fundraiser, and appearing on the Rachel Maddow show a few days before the vote. In the interview with Maddow, the Governor sounded very much like a national spokesman for the cause, and even referenced a conversation he had with Jesse Connolly, leader of the No on 1 side, about the eagerness of Connolly's campaign workers.

But not everyone in the state was happy with the Governor's sudden and unexplained conversion to the cause of same sex marriage. In the wake of the vote on November 3rd, irate emails flooded into the Governor's Office. Some of the emails were from homosexual rights activists who threatened a boycott of Maine. Other emails asked what the Governor was going to do about Jesse Connolly's election night pronouncement that he "will not quit until we know where every single one of these votes lives." Connolly, incidentally, was Chief of Staff to Hannah Pingree, Speaker of the Maine House, before becoming head of the No on 1 side.

Numerous writers took the Governor to task for the lapse in his Catholic faith. One Catholic wrote, "…this will not be tolerated by God…please remember Sodom and Gomorrah in the Bible. They were destroyed because of homosexuality, and this should not be supported by the government…Please put God in first place in your life."

By far the angriest email came from a homosexual rights activist. The wording was so vicious that someone in the Governor's Office turned the email over to the State Police.  Clearly, the hatred on display following the vote strongly suggests that many homosexual rights activists became unhinged after their loss. The hateful tone of these emails, along with the Governor's participation in the decadent HRC banquet show that a kind of collective moral insanity has taken hold of the liberal wing of government in Augusta; and like individuals afflicted with the same malady, many liberal legislators are now stone deaf to the appeal of reason and the voice of the people.
